Historic Building

The Edward Pease Public Library was built with a donation from Edward Pease in 1884. An inscription reads `Edward Pease Free Library¿. Plaque on west wall refers to a stone with an iron hitching ring set below. This is where W.T. Stead, the celebrated campaigning journalist, used to tie his horse when he was editor of the “Northern Echo”. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law.
