A 1 Latin. Undated, but between 1189 – 1195. Prior Bertram, one of the witnesses, became prior of Durham in 1189, and bishop Puiset died in 1195. This deed, being an early one, has been calendared fairly fully. Dr. Hamilton Thompson supplied the translation of the two passages given in the original Latin. The letters in represent letters omitted in the original document, i.e. words contracted have been extended by the supplying of the letters omitted. Charter whereby Hugh, bishop of Durham, confirms to Thomas de Pincerneria, his servant, all the land with wood between the boundaries of Bradeleia and of Bursebrades and of Linz and the boundaries between Depedene and the road which leads from Billig to Messerode, and thence to the Pont. To have etc. of God and St. Cuthbert and of the bishop and successors freely with all things pertaining to this land, and with the chapel if he will build one, and with the mill which he may have within his bounds, and with quittance of pannage from his own house (et cum capella si facere voluerit, et cum molendino habendo infra divisas suas et cum adquietatione pammagii de propria domo sua);paying yearly a byzant at the shrine of St. Cuthbert at the Feast of St. Cuthbert in Easter for the oblation which they the bishops are accustomed to make, and another byzant, or 2 shillings, to them for all other services etc. And no forester shall inter-meddle with anyone within his bounds for the worthiness and reverence of St. Cuthbert and in recognition of the aforesaid offering, but he shall assart as much as he will and exact as much as he will for his own need and that of his men (nullus forestarius intromittet de aliquo infra divisas suas pro dignitate et reverentia Sancti Cuthberti, et recognitione predictae obblationis, sed quantum voluerit sartabit et quantum voluerit ad opus sui et suorum tensabit) Thomas and heirs may take and have fuel and timber (focalia et meirenium) for the making and repairing of houses for himself and his men. If the bishop, or his successors, impose a common aid through the Bishopric Thomas shall be quit by another byzant. Witnesses: Bertramo priore et conventu de Sco.
