March 1614/5 (1) Roger Lumley of Axesheeles alias Axewell Howses, gentleman, and John Lumley his son and heir (2) William Smythe of Durham, gentleman; Thomas Smythe of Walridge, gentleman; and Parcivell Keneleside, servant to William Smythe Bargain and sale by (1) to (2) of the capital messuage called Axesheeles alias Axewell Howses, and lands there called the Great Somer Pasture, the Meadowe Close, the Oxeclose, the Broomefield, Talbot Grene, Jacksons Close, the close next above the house, the Calf Close, the Birkes and the Lowe Eeles, the Colestaithes and the meadow adjoining the River Darwen in Whickham (except one staith of three keelrooms in the possession of William Blakeston of Gibside) and lands called the Riding, the Great Spittle Meadowe, the Little Spittle Meadowe and the Shovel breads (35a) all in the parish of Whickham and all the coalmines of (1) at Axesheeles, alias Axew 11 Kouses and Swalwell.
