The boundary of the coalfield is indicated by a dashed line. No route is shown east of Darlington. Tomlinson (Tomlinson’s North Eastern Railway: Its Rise and Development, p.51) notes that the plans ‘bore evident signs of hasty preparation without a section or even the engineer’s name ‘ He also states (p.62) that ‘The promoters of the bill had been allowed by the House to deposit, on or before the 12th of March 1819, the section of the line which, as they stated, in consequence of the illness of one of the surveyors, they had omitted to lodge at the proper time.’ Original number 38a – From: DEPOSIT AND REGISTRATION
