Strathmore Estate – Correspondence and personal papers: Estate agents (part 5) McQueen, Bradley, Kirkup

Records of Thomas F. McQueen and Ernest Hodgson Kirkup, agents in overall charge of the English estates of the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, from 1929 to c.1966; also Herbert Bradley, chief clerk at the Strathmore estates office, Barnard Castle. Thomas F. McQueen was agent for all the English estates from 1929 to 1937. He was working for the Earl of Strathmore as early as 1889 as clerk at the estate office. Also agent for the Durham estates of the Crichton-Stuart family (the Marquises of Bute) and Norman Field’s Lartington estate. Herbert Bradley was chief clerk at the Strathmore estates office, Barnard Castle, from July 1934 to 1939. He was working for the Earl of Strathmore as early as 1903. Address: ‘The Nook’, Staindrop. Ernest Hodgson Kirkup (Major) was agent to the Earl of Strathmore for all the English estates from 1937 to c.1966. He worked for Peases West collieries at Crook, 1907; Pelaw Main Colliery Co. Ltd. 1921 – 1923; John Bowes and Partners Ltd. 1923 – 1936 (assistant to Armstrong and Sons) Also agent for the Durham estates of the Crichton-Stuart family. Commanding officer of no. 25 group, Local Defence Volunteers, Gateshead; Arbitrator for the Durham Coal Owners Association. Addresses: Leafield House, Birtley, and after 1938 at Oakfield, Low Fell.
