M/DaElmElm Ridge Methodist Church[formerly Wesleyan Methodist] Elm Ridge Methodist church was built as a private house by John Pease, who died in 1868 before the building was complete. His widow and unmarried daughter, Mary Anna, lived there until his widow’s death in 1870. In 1873 Mary Anna married Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin from Lewes and Elm Ridge was their home until Jonathan’s death in 1926 and Mary Anna’s in 1928. At the suggestion of Mr G. M. Harroway it was purchased for, and converted to, use as a Methodist church. Mr Harroway gave a loan for the purchase of the building and actively supervised the conversion. He subsequently cancelled the loan and made a gift of the building and four acres of land to the church. In 1936 he assumed responsibility for the costs of the conversion and in the same year a Mr Duteran Croft gave the church a pipe organ in memory of his wife. Two well-known musicians, Harry Hayman and his wife, Ada Alsop, were associated with Elm Ridge.
