Memorandum, by Henry Pease, 14 October 1851; copy, with annotations, made by Edward Lloyd Pease, 1911 Describes Quaker properties in Darlington as follows: E.P.’s house bought 1799 or 1800; previously in the occupation of Jane or James Robinson, diaper manufacturer; the garden had been a tan yard Ianson’s property was bought by James I’anson for the linen trade Clark, butcher?; T. Russell, linen manufacturer; W. Fothergill; Singleton, a Friend and linen manufacturer; Thomas Robson; Widow Church Late Hazlewood – built by Tober, a Friend; then E. Hall; then Nathan Robson; previously Jane Wheeler; D. Wheeler had led a servant, Brady, to believe she would be his wife; then W. Ord; T. Evans; the lower side was occupied by James I’anson, linen manufacturer Ann Coleman’s and house below, occupied by Gideon Philips, a linen manufacturer James Backhouse, a linen manufacturer, lived in Ann Coleman’s house until his marriage, when he lived in Skinnergate Row and Precincts, now Windalley: Barnett, Stephen Lincoln, manufacturers; Edward Backhouse settled on the north side of the entrance and William Backhouse on the south side. T. Parks, Thomas Robson on his marriage settled in it. Post Office: John Hedley; James Backhouse, grandfather of Jonathan Backhouse; Jonathan Backhouse his son settled in small house between Post Office and Joseph Pease’s Office (brother of Henry Pease) Next house was built by Joseph Pease, grandfather of Henry Pease; next house built by J. Clement, a timber manufacturer. Edward Pease does not remember any linen manufacturers in Darlington other than in Northgate. Edward Pease my great grandfather, settled in Priestgate. The house had a large garden in which a deer, a present from Lord Darlington, was kept. Afterwards built a house, c.1732, where Walker & Luck now are, next to Barclays Bank. After his death, in the possession of the Robsons. Walters shop with a backyard which stretched as far as Houndgate. Bought by Richard Richardson, from Whitby, Yorkshire; Lydia Richardson, mother-in-law of Joseph Pease who lived in the Grove House behind their? corner occupied by Thomas Pease, William Aldham.
