Interview with Mr Robert Belcher

Gradual development and expansion of Horden streets and amenities. Steam wagon brought in bricks for new houses. People living in allotments, some had been evicted from pit houses. Tap in the street, but no facilities in the allotments. Not much money to go around. Community, everyone went to church. Obeyed parents. Not much to do, watched others play billiards. Some joined up to get out of putting in the mine. Brother fined for joining up instead of going to pit. Went to court as a child because had no boots to go to school in – Colonel on the bench mistook six man pay note for one man’s pay. Miners paid badly, kept down. Hungry in 1926 strike. Washing clothes – soap and rainwater. Arranging bathing in living room. Fighting normal, but people couldn’t afford to be very drunk. Rent kept off your pay. Big classes at school. Miners played football and went to cinema. Would save for Durham Big Meeting. School trips to the beach, would play trick to get extra cake, lighting fires – beach later ruined. Poor conditions in the pit, lots died. Those fighting for better conditions often veterans of the trenches. Man ran a gym for lads, another tried to start off rugby. Girls not allowed out in make up, so would rub cheeks with red card! Hard to get the injured to a hospital. Some had no different clothes for football games, wore pit clothes. Effects of oil prices on miners. Bevan boys, who left afterwards. Mines now run by fitters and electricians. Miners have a rough deal compared to other jobs, relations with bosses.
