Volunteering

We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have a wonderful group of volunteers who support The Story as a place to discover the past, celebrate the present and create the future of County Durham.

Volunteers are key to unlocking and sharing Durham’s stories. As a volunteer you’ll be part of Volunteer Durham – Durham County Council’s Culture, Sport & Tourism volunteer service, which currently supports over 2,000 volunteers. We are committed to supporting you as a volunteer so that your experience is rewarding and fulfilling. This includes your induction, health and safety and training plan.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we have a wide variety of interesting and rewarding volunteering opportunities, whether you’re looking to build skills, meet new people, gain work experience or support your local community heritage. Our opportunities include both in person (on site and in the community) as well as online (remote). There is something for everyone, with no experience needed. Through volunteering with us you are ensuring that more people can experience, learn about and enjoy the heritage of our region, whether you’re making visitors feel welcome, assisting with the collections, or helping the next generation to discover their story.

When can I get involved?

We currently have an open volunteering opportunity to support with our weekly Thursday morning under 5’s session. The role involves supporting the session leader with music, play and craft activities, to help a wide variety of people and children engage with our collections.
