Volunteering

We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have a wonderful group of volunteers who support The Story as a place to discover the past, celebrate the present and create the future of County Durham.

Volunteers are key to unlocking and sharing Durham’s stories. As a volunteer you’ll be part of Volunteer Durham – Durham County Council’s Culture, Sport & Tourism volunteer service, which currently supports over 2,000 volunteers. We are committed to supporting you as a volunteer so that your experience is rewarding and fulfilling. This includes your induction, health and safety and training plan.

Thanks to National Lottery players, we have a wide variety of interesting and rewarding volunteering opportunities, whether you’re looking to build skills, meet new people, gain work experience or support your local community heritage. Our opportunities include both in person (on site and in the community) as well as online (remote). There is something for everyone, with no experience needed. Through volunteering with us you are ensuring that more people can experience, learn about and enjoy the heritage of our region, whether you’re making visitors feel welcome, assisting with the collections, or helping the next generation to discover their story.

Work Experience & Placements

We are able to support from September 2024 with a limited number of work experience opportunities and student placements. Please get in touch for more information: volunteering@thestorydurham.org

When can I get involved?

Our next volunteer in-take will take place summer 2024, with opportunities predicted to focus on Visitor Experience (supporting to greet and engage with a wide range of visitors to The Story and helping them find their way around the centre and grounds) and Walk Leader (leading a weekly circular public walk from The Story lasting approx. 60mins). Keep an eye on our website for further details.
