Can I bring a picnic?

Yes, in the summer you are welcome to use our outside seating and open spaces to lay down your picnic blanket. You can always top up your picnic with a takeaway hot drink or a slice of cake from the café.

Do you have child-friendly food options?

Families are welcome in our café. We have a range of indoor and outdoor seating available, including highchairs. 

We also have picnic benches outside in our gardens, where you can settle in and enjoy your own packed lunch.

Can I bring a pram or buggy?

Yes, you can bring your pram or buggy into The Story – you can keep it with you in most areas of our building, or there’s space to leave it if you’d prefer.

Do you have baby changing facilities?

We have baby changing facilities which are located in the ground floor disabled toilet near the main entrance.

Search and Discover

Visitors only need a booking if they want to consult original documents. Many of our most popular records, particularly those of interest to family historians, are available online using the computers in Search and Discover and is open during standard opening times and is free for anyone to use. 

During very busy times, we reserve the right to introduce temporary time limits on access to the computer terminals.

How do I book?

To book your collection room session go to: Access our Collections or to book onto one of our ticketed events go to: The Story Events. Please be aware that some of our Collection may contain themes or language that is outdated and might cause offence.

Access requirements

All seats in Search and Discovery are accessible and the desks in the Collections rooms are adjustable. There is a lift in the building to all floors.
