A circular medal, obverse shows left-facing bust of Queen Victoria. Reverse shows Britannia, holding flag and laurel crown, soldiers, and ships and has inscription: ‘SOUTH AFRICA’ around top. Edge is inscribed: ‘5223 PTE J. HANRATTY. DURHAM LT INFY’ (Impressed capitals). Has 2 medal clasps: ‘SOUTH AFRICA 1902’ and ‘TRANSVAAL’. Ribbon has red edges with two blue stripes and a broad central orange stripe. Associated person: Hanratty, J (service number: 5223)
