| EP/SS.SH 4/506-557 | 61 papers | Correspondence relating to the purchase of a site for a new Parish Hall. In order to raise the necessary money, two properties were put up for sale. Mrs. A.M. Rogers, tenant of one of the properties in Readhead Street, purchased it through her agents, Vasey and Reed. An offer was made for the second property by the Tyne Wire Co. Ltd., but they withdrew as the price was too high. The Church then purchased a property in Cornwallis Street which was vacated by the Northern Press Engineering Co. Ltd. Henry Abey of Henry Chapman, Son and Co., solicitors acted for the Church. Applications were made to the Durham Diocesan Board for Church Building and the Ecclesiastical Commission for grants towards the cost of converting the premises into a parish hall. Plans were halted by the proposal to widen Cornwallis Street and Coronation Street, thus entailing increased costs. Eventually the District Valuer estimated a sum of £950 compensation to be paid to the vicar and churchwardens. Most of the letters are written to Rev. P.F. Ardagh-Walter, 1935 – 1939 | ||||||||||||
