Pombal …

Pombal, 1 May 1809 Craddock and Beresford had decided to move on Coimbra when Wellesley took command but did not use the letters authorising him to do so sent to him by the government. Wellesley advises that Cuesta must act defensively against Victor until Soult is dealt with. The position at Santarem is very strong. The French cannot cross the Tagus without boats and the occupation of Santarem and Golegam makes Lisbon secure. (continued from Coimbra, 2 May) Wellesley enthusiastically received.
